Fix a QR code that will not scan
Separate image-recognition problems from broken links, then test one change at a time.
First identify which part is failing
If the camera never recognizes a code, investigate the image and viewing conditions. If it recognizes a link but the page fails to open, investigate the destination. Regenerating a perfectly readable QR image will not repair an expired page or a login requirement.
| Symptom | First check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| No scan prompt | White margin, focus, glare and physical size | Try the original export on a screen, then a larger print proof. |
| Wrong page opens | The URL entered before export | Correct the URL, generate a new code and replace distributed artwork. |
| Access denied or login | Destination sharing settings | Make the intended resource public, or explain the required access. |
| Wi-Fi join fails | Network name, password and security choice | Check case and spaces, then test on the actual guest network. |
Use the original as a control
Download the code directly from Waterlil. Compare it with the image in your final document. If the original scans but the document version does not, the change likely happened in resizing, cropping, compression or printing. Avoid screenshots of screenshots and social-messaging previews that may resize the image.
Change one thing at a time
Restore a dark foreground and white background first. Move away from reflected light. Clean the camera lens and let it focus. Make sure the entire image and border are visible. Next try a larger version. If the pattern is very dense, use a shorter destination URL you control instead of encoding unnecessary text or tracking parameters.
When the QR is readable but the link is broken
Type the destination into a private browser window and, if possible, test on mobile data. Look for spelling mistakes, moved files, account-only access and expired temporary links. A static QR cannot change its stored address, but a page at an address you own can be repaired or redirected on your server.
Ask for help without sharing secrets
Email Waterlil with your device, browser, content type and whether the original export or only the print fails. Include a non-sensitive example if possible. Do not send Wi-Fi passwords or private access links. See the contact page for details.
